From the patient perspective, it’s hard to tell just how much change is going on in the world of hip replacement surgery. After all if you don’t need hip replacement surgery, then a passing clip on the news or a headline in the paper might be all you ever really hear about today’s rapidly changing technology.
Of course, when you or a loved one needs a hip replacement, all of that passing information suddenly becomes extremely important. If you’re considering a total hip replacement – 332,000 Americans will have one this year – let us help bring you up to speed.
Minimally- and Micro-Invasive Hip Replacements
Total hip replacement surgery is quicker, safer, and more effective than ever before with the minimally invasive techniques used at Hedley Orthopaedic Institute in Phoenix and around the world. Benefits of a minimally invasive total hip replacement (when compared to traditional hip surgery) include:
Less blood loss
Shorter hospital stay (some patients go home same day)
Shorter recovery time (some patients walk the same day)
Smaller surgical incisions
Less/No damage to surrounding muscles and tendons
No unnatural twisting of the hip during surgery
More natural feeling hip after surgery

Direct Posterior Approach
The mini direct posterior approach is also performed through a small incision just above the hip. With this approach, the hip is left in its natural resting position and muscles and tendons are not cut or damaged. Hedley Orthopaedic Institute is the only practice in Phoenix to offer the mini direct posterior approach for total hip replacement.
