What are stem cells?

A stem cell is a cell that has the potential to differentiate into a very specific kind of cell. A stem cell, for example, might turn into a blood, skin, bone, or nerve impulse-transmitting cell. Where do perinatal stem cells come from?

At Hedley Orthopaedic Institute, sports medicine physicians use BioDFactor® Viable Tissue Matrix, a liquid allograft that contains amniotic stem cells. These cells are taken directly from the amniotic fluid of donors who undergo a rigorous screening, testing, and medical record review process.

The liquid tissue matrix consists of proteins, cytokines, growth factors, and other chemical compounds. The stem cells in this liquid allograft are broadly multipotent, and can easily differentiate into a variety of cell types. 

Are amniotic stem cells safe?

Yes. The manufacturer reports that tissues used in BioDFactor® Viable Tissue Matrix are recovered, processed, and distributed by FDA and AATB accredited tissue banks. Donors are pre-screened in a process that reviews their medical records and evaluates their pre-natal test results. Furthermore, the Medical Director confirms eligibility through:

  • Review of blood test results
  • Donor medical history
  • Communicable disease testing

All tissues are recovered using an aseptic recovery technique during sterile cesarean section. Infection disease screening requirements either meet or exceed all FDA and AATB requirements. Culturing and toxicity testing is performed prior to lot release.
