The Hedley Orthopaedic Institute is proud to offer Micro-Invasive Surgical Hip Replacement Options, SuperPATH and the Direct Superior Surgical Approach. Read on to find out more infromation about each micro-invasive option.
The Direct Superior Approach
Hedley Orthopaedic Institute surgeons, Drs. Hedley, Gough, McWhorter, and Sumko are using a new state-of-the-art device that promotes a faster recovery time allowing the patient to get back to the activities they enjoy quicker.
Hedley Orthopaedic Institute is the only facility in Phoenix, Arizona to offer the Direct Superior Approach, a Micro-invasive surgical procedure that uses one small incision for adequate visualization and proper placement of components. This enables a surgeon to implant a total hip replacement without damaging any of the patient’s muscles and tendons, or forcing the patient’s leg into an abnormal position during surgery.
Patients will benefit from:
- Less muscle damage
- No hip precautions after surgery
- Potential for outpatient hip replacement or home by the next day
- Lower dislocation damage
- Minimal pain after surgery
- Minimal pain medication required
- Low blood loss to the patient
- Smaller surgical incision
- Lower complication rates
- More natural positioning of the leg during surgery with less twisting of the extremity involved
The Hedley Orthopaedic Institute offers SuperPATH, or Supercapsular Percutaneously-Assisted Total Hip (also known as the “northern“ approach or “northern exposure“), a revolutionary micro-invasive surgical procedure that enables a surgeon to administer total hip replacement without damaging any of the patient’s muscles and tendons, or dislocating a patient’s hip during surgery. Unlike traditional hip replacement, the SuperPATH approach builds the tools and implants in-situ (inside the body), so the hip is never twisted into unnatural positions during surgery — a common element to other hip surgery techniques.
SuperPATH incorporates an incision above the hip. Taking this “northern“ route to the hip maximizes stability and helps promote the patient’s rapid recovery. Unlike many other micromally-invasive techniques, this innovative procedure is completely adjustable and can be customized for each patient’s needs. SuperPATH enables surgeons to take into account each patient’s unique anatomy, select the most appropriate implant and selectively release individual muscles during surgery, only if necessary.
Combining cutting-edge technology with advanced surgical techniques, this innovative procedure promotes soft tissue preservation and speeds recovery time — to a matter of weeks in most cases, versus months for a traditional approach. Patients may also benefit from:
- Less pain
- Less blood loss during surgery
- Less scarring
- Minimal postoperative precautions or movement restrictions
- Shorter hospital stays
- Decreased hip dislocation risks
- More natural feeling hip
The SuperPATH procedure can only be performed at St. Luke’s Medical Center, the affiliate hospital of the Hedley Orthopaedic Institute.
