Call me biased, but joint replacement surgery is one of the most fascinating surgical fields to be in today. As new technologies are introduced to the marketplace, surgery is becoming a viable option for an increasing number of patients. Plus, the outcomes of joint replacement surgery are dramatically improving.
Here at Hedley Orthopaedic Institute, we’re very excited to offer the latest in total hip replacement surgery with new state-of-the-art technology from Stryker. With this technology, we’re able to perform total hip replacements using a direct superior approach. Currently, Hedley Orthopaedic Institute is the only practice in Phoenix to offer the direct superior surgical hip approach.
What is a direct superior approach?
With this approach, the surgeon makes just one small incision in the hip, which allows for adequate visualization and the proper placement of surgical components. In other words, the entire hip replacement is performed through just one small incision, leaving muscles and tendons undamaged and the hip’s natural alignment intact.
What are the patient benefits for this type of total hip replacement?
There are many patient benefits with the direct superior approach.
Less muscle/tendon damage
No hip precautions after surgery
Procedure may be performed as an outpatient surgery or patient goes home next day
Lower dislocation rate
Minimal pain after surgery
Minimal pain medication required
Less blood loss (compared to traditional hip replacement)
Smaller surgical incision
Lower complication rates
Leg remains in a more natural position during surgery (less twisting of the extremity)
